Alddreu is a field located in the southwest of Jeju Island, South Korea. During the era of Japanese occupation, the Field of Alddreu was used as a Japanese military airfield. In the mid-1920’s, Japan forced the residents of Jeju Island to build a runway, an airplane hangar, an ammunition depot, and other military structures over a ten-year period. Since the hangars are so large, they were difficult to construct, which required harsh, physical labor from the Jeju Island residents. There were 20 large hangars constructed near the cabbage and potato fields, which you can now go inside of and tour.

The Navy Air Force Airfield and hangar facilities originally had a total area of 660,000 square meters. After the Manchurian Incident, the Sino-Japanese War, and the Pacific War, the airfield was fortified, increasing the area to 2.65 million square meters. At the time when the Airfield was the most used, more than 2,500 Japanese Air Force personnel and 25 fighter jets were being deployed. Japan used Alddreu Airfield as an outpost for the China-Japan war, as it was the most convenient location for the Japanese to refuel, so they could immediately conduct airstrikes on Shanghai, Beijing, and Nanjing. Japan occupied Shanghai in November 1938, so Japan’s military airfield was eventually moved to China while Alddreu Airfield was then used as a training field for Kamikaze pilots.

Alddreu Airfield is the remains of Japan’s military outpost that was used to attack China and their military presence in Korea, a trace of Korea’s tragic history. The painful sacrifice of all residents of Jeju Island to build this airfield due to Japan’s oppression should be remembered and honored.
