Killing Fields are located in Cambodia, where a number of people from 1.7 to 2.2 million people died during the era of Khmer Rouge. The party of Rouge executed all people considered to be enemies including all intellectuals, and anyone who was associated with a foreign government. It was the era of Cambodian Genocide under brutal leadership. Throughout the Killing Fields, there are numerous bones and skulls sticking out of the ground.

Before the reign of Khmer Rouge, Cambodia was ruled by Japan. In 1945, King Sihanouk declared independence of Cambodia and in 1953, Cambodia gained freedom from police and military authority. Cambodia then became a completely independent state from Japan and France. Shortly following, Sihanouk withdrew diplomatic relations from the U.S. who were in conflict with Vietnam and created neutral government policies. Soon in 1970, pro-U.S. militants carried out a coup in cooperation with the U.S. and ousted the king, when Lon Nol seized power. However, the U.S. air raid had completely devastated Cambodian farmlands. Naturally, the economy collapsed and many people became refugees.

Taking advantage of the chaotic state of the country, the Khmer Rouge seized power again. He harshly criticized the pro-U.S. policies and with the support of the Soviet Union and China, he tried to install a communist government. Many people such as farmers, and factory workers rallied around the communist ideas of Rouge. Soon after, he named Cambodia as Democratic Campuchia and initiated the Cultural Revolution. In order to install a new communist government, he ordered the execution of all people with higher education, or those associated with foreign countries, suspicious of those with counter revolutionary thoughts who may be spies. Rouge even ordered the torture and imprisonment of anyone who could speak foreign language and wore glasses, because they looked like intellectuals. Cambodia became a killing field as Rouge used babies of his victims as target practice, fire ants to dig into people’s flesh, and other cruel, unimaginable methods.
