The issue of the victims of Japanese sexual slavery or “comfort women” was first brought to the public eye in 1988 due to women in Korea advocating for the victims. The Korean government first established the House of Sharing in Seoul in October 1992 with the intention of helping the victims who were previously in hiding, but eventually settled in Gwangju.

Advocates for comfort women have demanded for the Japanese government to recognize the sexual crimes and issue a formal apology to the victims. However, the Japanese government has not officially addressed the issue and crimes, so the voices of the victims may disappear into history. Therefore, an organization built the Museum of Sexual Slavery by Japanese Military to restore the honor of the victims, and to make their history remembered.

This history museum is the world’s first museum focused on the history of Japanese military sexual slavery during Japanese colonial rule in Korea. The museum was built to teach the public about the history of Japanese military sexual slavery, and to honor the memory of deceased victims. During Japanese occupation, about 200,000 women, mostly young girls, were forced to be comfort women in brothels for Japanese military. The brothel was a facility where these Korean comfort women were forced to have sex with an average of 10 to 30 Japanese soldiers a day. The horrible sexual crimes against these women, who had no human rights, ought to be commemorated in history.
